The accident that severely injured one worker on (under, actually) the Dueling Dragons roller coaster at Universal Orlando's Islands of Adventure has sparked federal interest. OSHA (The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration) said this morning that the agency had begun to probe the details of the accident.
Michael Wald, spokesperson for OSHA, said the federal agency had launched the investigation only after receiving a "referral" regarding the accident, but declined to say who sent the referral. Wald said Universal had not contacted OSHA itself, but the park officials are only required to contact the agency in the event of of a fatality or three employee hospitalizations.
The accident occurred on July 1 at around 7:30 a.m. Universal spokesperson Tom Shroder had previously said the accident has stressed that the ride itself is still safe, stating: "Our ride is safe... What happened this morning had nothing to do with the safety of the ride experience."
