Universal City Development Partners, the owner of Universal Orlando, reported a 28.6 percent increase in second quarter profit even as its attendance dropped.

The Orlando theme park reported earning $27.1 million during the quarter on revenue of $215.7 million. During the same period last year, it earned $21.1 million on revenue of $241 million.

Universal said its park admissions fell 14 percent during the quarter compared to last year, and blamed the decrease primarily on the global economic downturn.

The park owner said lower operating costs associated with the decrease in business helped bolster the bottom line.
