The $1-billion effort to revive the park will try to re-create the era when Walt Disney arrived in Hollywood.

The Walt Disney Co. today unveiled details of its extensive $1-billion make-over of Disney's California Adventure, as it seeks to give the troubled theme park the one thing it now lacks -- an emotional connection that will keep people coming back.
FOR THE RECORD:
An earlier version of this article said visitors could view plans for the make-over today. They will not go on display until Monday.
The sweeping overhaul will transport visitors to the California of the 1920s, when Walt Disney first arrived in Hollywood. In the same way that Disneyland's Main Street evokes Disney's hometown of Marceline, Mo., at the turn of the last century, the new California Adventure will follow the young animator on his journey to Los Angeles.

Instead of Sleeping Beauty's castle, California Adventure will feature a towering structure reminiscent of Hollywood's golden era: a recreation of the Carthay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles where Disney premiered the movie " Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" in 1937. A Red Car trolley, recalling the Pacific Electric Railway, will clang through the new entrance area, conjuring up the bygone era -- and winking at Walt's love of trains.

Also on the drawing board is a 12-acre expansion of the park that will bring to life the town of Radiator Springs, the setting for Disney/Pixar animated film "Cars," with three new attractions including the E-ticket "Radiator Springs Racers."

Sketches illustrate the planned changes for the Paradise Pier, which will take on a nostalgic feel and feature classic Disney characters in new boardwalk games re-themed as attractions, such as Mickey's Fun Wheel (now the Sun Wheel.) One highlight is the planned "World of Color" nighttime display of water effects, color lighting and music to bring new energy to the pier.

Disney's sizable investment, to be spent through 2012, comes atop the $1 billion the entertainment giant committed to build the park, which opened in 2001, and $100 million more spent on new attractions. The stakes for Disney are higher than boosting anemic attendance at California Adventure, which has always been overshadowed by Disneyland.

"What's at stake for Disney is their reputation," said Gary Goddard, head of Gary Goddard Entertainment.

Visitors to Disney's California Adventure will get their first glimpse of plans for the reimagined park Monday, when the Walt Disney Imagineers put dozens of working models, concepts and sketches on display in the Golden Vine Winery.

The designers will afford a window into the creative process in a converted wine cellar renamed the "Blue Sky Cellar."

Mulholland Madness — a themeless off-the-shelf roller coaster that earned Disney’s California Adventure (http://www.latimes.com/DisneysCaliforniaAdventure) its on-the-cheap reputation — will get a Goofy’s Sky Skool “refreshing” as part of a $1.1-billion effort (http://travel.latimes.com/daily-deal-blog/index.php/best-of-2007-disneys-1149/) to add a heavy dose of Mickey Mouse and friends to the under-performing theme park.
Gone is the giant foldout map of Southern California that always seemed like a futile attempt to hide the fact that the coaster was nothing more than a wild-mouse ride found at any freeway entertainment center. Gone too is the Magic Mountain-esque, slapdash, Caltrans maintenance-yard theme involving little more than a plastering of roadwork signs.
The new back story follows Goofy’s attempts to teach a group of novice pilots how to fly. Naturally, things go awry. The reworked ride is expected to open in 2010.
Bob Weis, California Adventure’s chief imagineer, said the four-person Mulholland Madness cars will get an extensive makeover. The Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida, features a similarly themed Goofy’s Barnstormer roller coaster with airplane styling and a front propeller.
Blue Sky Disney (http://blueskydisney.blogspot.com/2008/02/blue-sky-alert-america-anaheim-buy-and.html) suggests the Goofy makeover is merely a placeholder for a true E-ticket-type attraction — essentially a Disney character Band-Aid meant to hide a scar until more money frees up for future expansion.
In addition to the Goofy coaster, Paradise Pier will get a complete Disney overlay in the next few years, with the Orange Stinger transforming into the Silly Symphony Swings (http://travel.latimes.com/daily-deal-blog/index.php/orange-stinger-2059/) (with a “Band Concert” Mickey Mouse makeover) and the park’s iconic Sun Wheel becoming Mickey’s Fun Wheel. The boardwalk games and shops, currently sporting tongue-in-cheek California references, will adopt new Disney character back stories as well.

You and me both!! We were faced with so many photo ops! All the characters were there, so much info on the big screen!! THey spent alot of time on DL and this project...after the presentation, which was amazing, they had Goofy, Donald and Pluto in the room with the kids (they offered day care for kids)..anyway, we took Ava in there...
She basically had a private play date with them, it was amazing to say the least! One on one time..with a few other children, no crowds, no lines! Donald taught her how to shake her "tail feather"..lol..So we had to capture these on my cell phone camera!
During the event, they offered finger foods, snacks, open bar....
We called it a great FREE Disney Night!

One day, we will add on, they do have the best incentives at these events!
SOmetimes folks that are non IL residents get their panties in a bunch cause they feel its not fair for us to take advantage..however, I have read some folks have flown in jsut for an event to take advantage of the incentives!

Ok..totally have digressed from subject at hand....
