In 2005, Julia Montminy, a ceramics instructor, and her three daughters founded the Empty Bowls program in their community.Â* Empty Bowls is a grassroots effort to raise money and awareness to end hunger and food insecurity. Julia and her family created ceramic bowls and held a party to sell the bowls filled with home-made soup to their community, with all profits benefiting a local food bank.Â* The entire family pitches in for the event in their own way â?? Julia leads her classes in making the bowls, her daughter Madelaine and her jazz band provide entertainment for the events, her daughter Isabel pitches in by collecting funds and washing dishes and her youngest, Caroline, designs a special T-shirt each year. Since their first event, Empty Bowls has generated more than $25,000 for local food charities.
