A group of singing and dancing teens from 'High School Musical' beat out the crazed Jigsaw from 'Saw 5' at this weekend's box office.
The first installment of Disney's 'High School Musical' to be released in theatres danced its way to the top of the weekend box office with $42 million. In the process, the third movie in the franchise also set a record for biggest opening for a musical, easily moving past 'Mamma Mia!' which held the distinction with $28 million.
Meanwhile, 'Saw V' opened in second with $30.5 million, in line with its previous three installments and respectable considering the movie has taken a beating from critics in early reviews. Debuting against HSM 3, it was the first since the original 'Saw' to finish out of the top spot.
However, the fact remains it's still a very lucrative franchise for Lionsgate and it's fair to say that we'll likely see sequels for both.
'Max Payne' saw a decrease of over 50% in its second week, which was expected. Meanwhile, 'Beverly Hills Chihuahua', which is now in its fourth weekend, continued to stay in the top five. Something we can't say for 'W' in its second week.
