Port Columbus International Airport’s newest carrier is now the latest passenger airline to levy a fee for passengers’ first checked bags.
The Orlando, Fla.-based airline said Wednesday it will begin charging $15 for customers’ first checked bag. The fee starts for travel on or after Dec. 5, while customers who bought tickets on or before Tuesday won’t be charged.
AirTran said it will continue to charge $25 for a second checked bag and $50 for each additional bag. Business-class travelers and A+ Rewards Elite members will be exempt from the first- and second-bag charges.
AirTran’s announcement comes about a week after Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE:DAL), which also operates at Port Columbus, said it plans to begin charging for passengers’ first checked bag. Delta became the last of the major U.S. carriers to levy such a fee.
AirTran began service from Port Columbus to three Southeast cities Nov. 6, becoming the 11th major airline to fly from the airport. The operating division of AirTran Holdings Inc. (NYSE:AAI) makes two daily flights from Port Columbus to its hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and one daily flight each to Orlando and Fort Myers, Fla.
