ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - SeaWorld aquarists and veterinarians are nursing an unusually high number sea turtles back of health, after a baffling mass stranding occurred along Florida's northeast coast.
SeaWorld, a global leader in the rescue and treatment of sea turtles, accommodated 11 threatened and endangered turtles at the park's rehabilitation facilities. Staff members are working to revive Loggerhead, green and Kemp Ridley turtles.
The stranding numbers are three times higher than normal, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.
All of the marine animals rescued have been anorectic, hypoglycemic and anemic. According to SeaWorld, these are all typical ailments of stranding victims. Other turtles have also been found with impacted shells and wounded flippers- common injuries from boat strikes.
SeaWorld staff members are treating the marine reptiles with antibiotics and feeding tubes, while monitoring blood levels and mending wounds.
Other marine facilities in Florida and southern Georgia are also helping accomodate rescued sea turtles.
